The 5 Common Attributes Shared by Close Communities and Groups

Close communities and groups have unique traits, but all share fundamental membership characteristics
Organizations, groups, and close communities are where most social behavior occurs. With our society becoming more detached due to technology and busy schedules, it makes it harder to feel a sense of community. That’s one reason why close communities and groups have become so popular and necessary. And while these collections of people might seem different, each possesses some similar critical elements that define them.
1. They’ve established boundaries

Creating boundaries shared by the group creates the processes in which people can become a part of the organization, how they communicate, how they receive their information, and what to do if you no longer want to be a member, among other things. While you want to grow your membership, establishing boundaries and exclusive advantages to membership create the opportunity for stronger bonds among members. For example, individuals may have access to a private membership directory that only active members can see and use.
2. They have a sense of belonging

Both boundaries and a sense of emotional connection can ensure that members feel a sense of belonging. This sense of community can also create a feeling of acceptance, knowing that you’re surrounded by like-minded individuals. The belief that one fits in with the group and has a valued place is what creates that distinction from group to group, although the basic feeling is the same.
3. They have a defined means of communication

A close community or group does not exist without defined communication methods. This comes in the form of meetings, agendas, emails, text messaging, and potentially a group webpage. In order to support these communication efforts, it is essential that the leaders of each group have created easy and accessible communication methods for all members, with the organization as well as with one another, no matter where they are. That’s one reason membership management tools have become beneficial. Making sure your members have a voice is essential to making them feel like they can honestly say they are a part of something.
4. They have shared tasks and goals

By definition, a group is three or more people who work together interdependently on a commonly-agreed-upon activity or goal. Whether you are creating volunteer opportunities in the community, fundraising, or partaking in a common sport or hobby, your group was created because of a shared desire or purpose.
5. They have a personal investment

Whether they have made an investment in the community itself, invested in membership dues, or given their time, close communities and groups thrive when members have a stake in the game. This personal investment is an important contributor to a person’s feeling of group membership, their perception of value in the group, and a sense of community. Every contribution from a member is important.
Each organization has its own reason for existing. However, the makeup of each group or community is relatively similar. They all have certain attributes that they share, a desire to follow a passion, and the perceived benefit of finding a group to help support these efforts.
Something all communities and groups should have, but many aren’t aware of, is membership management software. Whether you want to communicate through email or text, set up a group page, or collect funds and donations, memberplanet has the tools in place to make your life simplified.
